Imagined portrait of Mara Voss

Fictional artist / Botanical linework

Mara Voss

Mara looks at the places between leaves.

Space is part of the drawing.

In this imagined practice, a botanical drawing begins with the character of a stem: the slight lean, the missing leaf, the seed head that breaks the rhythm. Mara edits rather than fills. A cluster becomes a few well-placed marks; a branch stays open where a literal study might become dense. Night Herbarium and Winter Branch explore two versions of that restraint. One follows a growing structure. The other keeps the traces left after a season has passed. Reference images help name a feeling, but the drawing takes its own shape. A useful starting point is a plant form you notice repeatedly, together with an idea of how much untouched space you want around it.
